MEET YOUR CAPTAIN
I first came to Sitka thinking it would be temporary — just a chance to help a friend with commercial fishing for a season. But Sitka has a way of settling into your life quietly. One season turned into another, and before I knew it, the days were filled with friendships built on the water, the rhythm of small-town living, and views that felt new every time I saw them. Somewhere along the way, Sitka stopped being a stopover and became home. After decades of fishing and diving, life on the water looks different now — slower, calmer, without the pressure or the pace of commercial work. These days I get to notice the details I used to have to pass right by. The way the light lands on Mount Edgecumbe on a clear morning, humpbacks surfacing in the distance before erupting into a full breach, sea otters drifting together in the kelp. It’s a different kind of life, and one I’m grateful for every day. No rush. No crowds. Just honest time on the water, surrounded by the wildlife and landscapes that make this corner of Alaska what it is.
